Does sauna use lower sperm count? What the research actually says

Short answer: yes, regular sauna use measurably lowers sperm count and motility, and in the one controlled study that tracked it properly, the effect fully reversed once the sauna sessions stopped. That is a narrower finding than either side of the internet argument tends to make it. Below is what was actually measured.

The study

In 2013 a group led by Andrea Garolla published Seminal and molecular evidence that sauna exposure affects human spermatogenesis in Human Reproduction, the journal of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology. The design was simple and unusually direct.

Ten healthy men with normal semen parameters took two sauna sessions per week for three months. Each session was fifteen minutes at 80 to 90 degrees Celsius, which is an ordinary Finnish sauna and an ordinary session length. The researchers took measurements before the three months began, at the end of the three months, then again three months and six months after the men stopped.

At the end of the exposure period, sperm count and motility were both strongly impaired, at a significance level of P less than 0.001. The researchers also found changes further upstream, in chromatin condensation, histone to protamine substitution and mitochondrial function, which is the part that makes the finding hard to wave away as a measurement artifact. Something was happening to sperm production itself, not just to the sample in the cup.

Six months after the men stopped, every one of those measures was back to baseline.

Why heat does this

Sperm production is one of the few processes in the human body that requires a temperature below core. The scrotum sits outside the body for exactly that reason, and it holds a few degrees cooler than the 37 degrees Celsius running everywhere else. That temperature gap is not incidental, it is the operating condition.

A sauna removes the gap. Sitting in 80 to 100 degree air for fifteen or twenty minutes raises core temperature, and the tissue that is supposed to be running cooler than core gets carried up with it. The body has some capacity to shed that heat, but not against a room that hot for that long, repeated twice a week. What the study does not say

Three things, and they matter.

It does not say sauna makes you infertile. It measured semen parameters, not pregnancies. Sperm count and motility are inputs to fertility, not a verdict on it, and plenty of men with reduced counts conceive without difficulty.

It does not say the damage is permanent. The opposite: everything returned to baseline. If you use a sauna twice a week and stop, the evidence says your numbers come back, though on a timescale measured in months rather than days, because a full cycle of sperm production takes roughly two and a half months.

And it is ten men. It is a careful, well instrumented study with a clean before and after design, but it is ten men. Treat it as a strong signal, not a settled number.

So should you stop using the sauna?

Probably not, and that framing is the problem with most of the discussion around this.

The health case for regular sauna use is built on a large body of population research, most of it out of Finland, covering cardiovascular outcomes and all cause mortality. Nobody who has read that literature wants to tell you to give up the sauna. The heat is the point.

What the Garolla data suggests is narrower: the heat is doing something specific to one tissue that is supposed to be running cooler, and that effect tracks with exposure. If you are in the sauna four or five times a week, or if you and your partner are actively trying to conceive, that is worth knowing about rather than finding out later.

The options are not complicated. Use the sauna less often. Shorten the sessions. Sit lower, since a sauna is strongly stratified and the bench height changes the temperature meaningfully. Or reduce the heat that reaches the one place that is supposed to stay cool, and keep everything else about the session unchanged. Common questions

How long does it take for sperm to recover after heat exposure?
Spermatogenesis runs on a cycle of roughly seventy four days, so meaningful recovery is measured in months, not days. In the Garolla study all measures were back to baseline by six months after the last sauna session.

Is one sauna session going to matter?
The study measured a pattern of twice weekly exposure sustained for three months. A single session is not what was tested and there is no good evidence that it does anything lasting.

What about steam rooms and hot showers?
The mechanism is heat, not the specific room, so anything that raises scrotal temperature for a sustained period belongs in the same conversation. The sauna literature is simply the best measured.

Does cooling during the session actually change the outcome?
Nobody has run that trial. What is established is that the effect tracks with heat exposure, and that reducing local heat is the mechanically obvious lever. We would rather say that plainly than overstate it.

Should I stop using the sauna if we are trying to conceive?
That is a question for your doctor, and it is worth actually asking rather than reading a blog about it. Bring the study with you.
